Dedication by Senator Charles "Mac" Mathias of José Rodeiro’s Ransoming of Frederick 8’ x 24’ oil-on-wood, 1992 (Property of Walkersville High School (MD)).
In Walkersville High School (MD) in 1992, the great Maryland Senator Charles "Mac" Mathias, a native of Frederick (MD), dedicated Rodeiro’s “Ransoming of Frederick.” The mural depicts the perilous events of July 9, 1864, when Confederate forces under Gen. Jubal Early threatened to burn down Frederick (MD), unless a ransom was paid. In fact, Sen. Mathias’s grandfather (as a child) witnessed the threat. Rodeiro’s Walkersville mural resulted from his Maryland State Arts Council AiE Artist-in-Resident duties. (Photograph by Nuscha Rodeiro). |
